Local Markets: Tsukiji
Tsukiji, the world's largest wholesale food market operates from 3:00 a.m. Walking through the alleys is not exactly peaceful and one needs to keep an eye on the roaming vehicles. But it is hard to ignore the skills of the workers who are all men (women collect the money.) The fast-paced circulation of goods merges with Japanese efficiency as the high-tech machinery moves swiftly from one alley to another.
In October, a Tokyo chapter ends. Tsukiji Market will be relocated to a new site outside central Tokyo.
'LOCAL MARKETS' is a series of photographs taken in different Asian countries, depicting various street and indoor markets that maintain the pulse of everyday life and act as colorful mirrors of society. Asian markets are abundant, overflowing, chaotic, maze-like... They operate tirelessly and are the antithesis of the modern shopping mall. For locals, the market is a social anchor, a marker of life's daily routine where news are shared and relationships maintained.
